A radical new history of the idea of the "free market" from ancient Rome to the present

Jacob Soll’s new book revisits the intellectual history of the free market, tracing an innovative lineage from Cicero to Jean-Baptiste Colbert to Adam Smith and later redefinitions by Milton Friedman and others to understand how we arrived at its present meaning. In the process he overturns what we thought we knew about this essential but protean concept.Ìý

Please join us for an informal seminar discussion with Soll in which he will present his book and discuss the implications of this new way of conceptualizing the relationship between the state and the market.Ìý
