Professor Burgett will explore the question of what public scholarship is and why it matters.  His lecture begins with an exercise designed to highlight the situated-ness of answers to these questions before turning to a discussion of how they are currently addressed across the cultural disciplines and professions in the United States.  Focusing on the tension between the vertical integration of knowledge-making sectors and the lateral movement across them, Burgett suggests that the oppositions that respond to this tension – disciplinarity versus interdisciplinarity, basic versus applied research, bench versus bedside, specialization versus generalization – are false.  In their place, a focus on the question of how the positive capacity to work across knowledge-making sectors can be cultivated in the context of graduate education and (counter) professional development.
