"Performing a New Europe: Ukrainian Occidentalism of the 1940s in the Decolonial Perspective"

Tamara Hundorova examines the intellectual polemics of the “problem of Europe” among Ukrainian intellectuals in the Displaced Persons' Camps in post-war Germany as a response to the debates about the "crisis of the European spirit" among Western European philosophers and historians of the time. The focus of the talk is on the dialogue between a Kharkiv-born linguist Yuri Shevelov and a Lviv-born sociologist Volodymyr Yaniv regarding the connection of the center and periphery, the empire and nation, the Occident and the Orient. The revision of the universal narrative of European history allows us to analyze the post-war debates on Ukrainian Occidentalism in the context of contemporary decolonial studies and the theory of Occidentalism.
