The UW Odyssey Project: Changing Lives Through the Humanities
Please join the Humanities Education Focal Group for the third event in the Series on Public Humanities, co-sponsored by the Office of Community Engagement, the DLCL, and the Humanities Center.
12:00 pm, Lecture | Can the Humanities have the Power to Change Lives?
Since 2003, the award-winning University of Wisconsin-Madison Odyssey Project has offered a transformational two-semester humanities course for adults near the poverty level. Graduates of this program have moved from homelessness to graduate school, from incarceration to meaningful work in the community. We will be discussing this innovative program with its founder, Emily Auerbach.
Please watch the following short documentary prior to the lecture:
2:00 pm, Grad Student Workshop | Teaching to Non-traditional Students
What would teaching the humanities look like at a prison, Elderhostel, or high school? How might the texts we love to teach enrich the lives of nontraditional students and how might we adapt to better reach them? Teaching materials from Prof. Auerbach's courses on feminist literature will be provided.
