Details:

The DLCL offers funding to all students who declare a major or minor in our department.  The purpose is to support intensive summer language study and, for qualified students, to support original research projects that require travel to another country.

Applications will be evaluated on the strength of the proposal as part of a competitive pool by the undergraduate committee. In preparing your proposal, please consult with the appropriate Chair of Undergraduate Studies (French: Prof. Dan Edelstein; Italian: Prof. David Lummus; ILAC: Prof. Hector Hoyos; German: Prof. Matthew Smith; Slavic: Prof. Gabriella Safran; Comparative Literature: Prof. Margaret Cohen; Modern Languages: Prof. Elizabeth Bernhardt; and, if you are proposing a research project, with your adviser.

Funding can be used to cover travel (airfare and additional transportation), tuition for summer language study at an accredited school, lodging (if separate from tuition), as well as research expenses (such as museum entrance fees, archive entrance fees, etc.). This funding may be used in conjunction with other funding as long as your total funding does not exceed your expenses.

If you are awarded a grant, in order to receive your stipend you must show proof of current enrollment to the Student Affairs Officer, Denise Winters.  The grant also requires the student to be enrolled in Autumn 14/15. If you are working on a research project instead of enrolling in language study, you must show a detailed research plan that has been approved by your adviser.

You are required to enroll for a letter grade if you are taking language courses. Also, an OPI test will be administered through °®åú´«Ã½ language center before summer and within a month of your return in autumn.

If you are working on a research project, you will be expected to turn in a paper that is a minimum of15 pages.  This paper is based on the research you undertook during the summer. This paper will be due October 15, 2014.

To apply: Download the proposal application (PDF or WORD DOC). Submit your completed proposal with the mandatory signature of the Chair of Undergraduate Studies or of your adviser for research projects on or before February 14, 2014. You may be asked to revise for clarity, accuracy, or completeness. Your proposal will go before the undergraduate research committee and you will be notified of approval or denial by March 4, 2014.

After approval: Please discuss your plans with the Student Affairs Officer. Enroll in language study as soon as possible or prepare your detailed research plan with your adviser.
